Every platform publishes a recommended size and then quietly does its own thing to anything that does not match. Matching it yourself gives you control over the result.

Etsy listing photos
Etsy recommends at least 2000px on the shortest side for its zoom to work properly. Below that, buyers get a blurry close-up when they hover — which on handmade goods is exactly the detail you were hoping to sell.
eBay gallery images
eBay wants at least 500px on the longest side and works best around 1600px, where its zoom kicks in. Anything enormous just gets resized by eBay to something it prefers, usually less carefully than you would.
Your own storefront
A product grid does not need 4000px images. Serving them at the size they are displayed, roughly 800–1200px for most grids, cuts page weight by an order of magnitude with zero visible difference.
Print on demand artwork
Print files are the opposite problem — they need to be large enough at the print resolution. Upscale first if the original is small, then resize to the exact canvas the printer specifies.
Social posts
Each platform crops differently. Resizing to the aspect ratio you want beforehand means the crop happens where you decided rather than where an algorithm guessed.

Etsy listing images and the 2000 px rule
Etsy wants at least 2000 px on the shortest side and shows listing photos in a 4:3 frame. Anything narrower gets upscaled by Etsy; anything a different shape gets cropped by Etsy. Resizing yourself means you decide what stays in frame.
eBay square gallery thumbnails
eBay presents gallery images square, so a tall portrait photo loses its top and bottom to a crop you did not choose. Resizing to a square before upload puts the product in the middle of the frame where it belongs.
Social posts at the size each platform wants
Instagram, Pinterest and Facebook each have their own preferred ratio, and each will crop or pad anything else. Sizing per platform takes seconds and stops your product being sliced in half by an automatic crop.
Print at a real physical size
Print needs pixels, not a percentage — a 4×6 inch print at 300 DPI is 1200 × 1800 px. Resizing to the number the printer asks for removes the guesswork, and if the original is smaller than that number you need the upscaler first.

No tool is perfect, and any page claiming otherwise is selling you something. Here is roughly where the line sits.
Making images smaller
Reducing dimensions is the easy direction and the result is always clean. This is also where nearly all the file-size saving lives — halving both sides quarters the pixel count.
Making images larger
Stretching a small image to a bigger canvas gives you a soft result, because there is no extra detail to show. If you need it bigger, run the upscaler instead, which reconstructs detail rather than spreading it thinner.
Changing the aspect ratio
Entering a width and height with a different proportion to the original will squash or stretch the picture. Decide whether you want the shape changed or the image cropped before you type the numbers.
Five things worth knowing.
The mistakes here are easy to avoid once you know where they are.
- Keep the proportions unless you mean not to. A 4:3 photo forced into a square without cropping will look subtly wrong to everyone and obviously wrong to nobody, which is worse.
- Resize before compressing. Fewer pixels is a far bigger saving than more aggressive compression, and it costs nothing in quality when the image is being displayed smaller anyway.
- Match the platform's recommendation. If a marketplace says 2000px, give it 2000px. Anything larger is discarded on their end; anything smaller loses the zoom.
- Upscale, do not stretch. If the source is too small, resizing up will not help. That is what the upscaler is for.
- Keep your originals. Resizing is one-way. Archive the full-resolution files somewhere and work on copies.

Can I set exact pixel dimensions?
Yes. You type the width and height you want in pixels and get exactly that. There are no fixed presets you have to choose between.
Will resizing reduce the file size?
Substantially, if you are making the image smaller. File size scales with the number of pixels, so halving both the width and the height leaves roughly a quarter of the data. It is the biggest single saving available to you.
What size should Etsy listing photos be?
Etsy recommends at least 2000px on the shortest side so its zoom works properly. Square is the safest shape because that is how the thumbnails are displayed.
What size should eBay photos be?
At least 500px on the longest side is the minimum, and around 1600px is where eBay's zoom becomes available. Beyond that eBay resizes for you.
Will resizing up make my image bigger and sharper?
Bigger, yes. Sharper, no — there is no extra detail to reveal, so it will look soft. Use the upscaler for that, which reconstructs detail rather than stretching what is there.
Will my image get stretched?
Only if you enter dimensions with a different proportion to the original. Keep the ratio the same and the picture keeps its shape.
